Introduction to PETSc
[+]
Training & Workshops
The Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) provides a framework for development of computational science codes. Although scalability and high performance are crucial for scientific applications, the usability often turns upon other software factors, such as modular design, and extensibility. We will discuss these issues in the context of PETSc development. Moreover, we will present examples of PDE solvers developed in PETSc with advanced capabilities, such as unstructured meshes, multi-grid, and parallel sparse direct solvers. http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/user-services/training/

Training & Workshops
C++ is often characterized in the Scientific Community as being too bloated, slow, and complicated to be useful. In fact, quite the opposite is true. A number of high-powered, modern, extensible numerical software libraries now utilize C++; having some knowledge of the language is therefore beneficial now and for the foreseeable future. In this combined lecture and lab session, we will discuss basics of C++ usage including I/O, vectors, objects, and their relation to the same concepts in C. Special attention will be devoted to important topics like memory management, references vs. pointers, and the STL, which we feel are essential to effective use of the language by beginners, but which are typically relegated to more advanced courses. http://www.tacc.utexas.edu/user-services/training/classes/c-plus-programming-basics/

Profiling and Debugging Serial and Parallel Programs
[+]
Training & Workshops
The course covers profiling and debugging technologies available at TACC for performance optimization and debugging of serial and parallel codes. The course contains instructions for beginners and advanced users, along with a lab with demos and examples. The course consists of two parts. The first part covers debugging techniques, starting from the basic use of the GNU debugger (GDB) and finishing with an example of use of the parallel debugger DDT. The second part of the course addresses optimization and scalability. This part contains instructions on general optimization strategies, the use of timers, the GNU profiler (GPROF), and the MPIp package for scalability analysis. An example of profiling with an integrated package like HPCToolkit or Tau is also given. Prerequisites: A basic understanding of the UNIX/Linux command line environment is required. The lectures assume that you are familiar with either the C or the Fortran programming language.

Introduction to Matlab: An Interactive Visual Math Experience
[+]
Training & Workshops
Matlab is an easy-to-use yet extremely powerful "matrix laboratory", an interactive environment that supports a wide range of mathematical functions, analytical methods, and visualization tools for practically any kind of science problem, enabling you to solve computationally intensive problems faster than with traditional languages. In this workshop, you will get a hands-on introduction to the basics of Matlab's vector math and its scripting language. In this two-day workshop, you will get an introduction to the Matlab interface, matrix mathematics, and 2D plotting the first day. On the second day, you will learn the simple math and complex beauty of fractal geometry, and you will even learn how to use some of Matlab's advanced 3D visualization tools. You will also get a bit of background on other programs similar to Matlab. All Matlab example files will be provided online and available during and following the workshop. Modeling Instruction in High School Physics: An Introduction
[+]
Training & Workshops
Modeling Instruction in High School Physics is grounded on the thesis that scientific activity is centered on modeling: the construction, validation, and application of conceptual models to understand and organize the physical world. In this three-day, eighteen-hour introductory workshop, teachers learn to: • organize course content around a small set of basic models as the content core of physics; • engage students collaboratively in making and using models to describe, explain, predict, design, and control physical phenomena; • involve students in using computers as scientific tools for collecting, organizing, analyzing, visualizing, and modeling real data; • lots more! http://modeling.asu.edu/
